Out on a project

I’ve been out working on various projects that have taken me from any sort of phone or Internet access, which accounts for the lack of posts of late. I’ve got a bunch of photos to process and still more to come so hopefully there are some good captures among the pile. We’ll see…

Returned from San Francisco

My wife and I went on a long weekend trip to San Francisco. It had been a long time since we had escaped without the kids and it was a very nice vacation. Of course, I can’t go to San Francisco without carting along the camera, so it went along and I took several shots. I have a wonderful wife who indulges me and I love spending that time with her when we’re sitting around waiting for that perfect light.

I will be updating the site over the next while with images from the trip. I got several with which I am happy so I am excited to get them posted. Stay tuned.

Oh, and it has been far too long since I have posted something here or gone on a proper photo outing. I resolve to do better at that and, if I don’t, please send me spam to remind me.

Busy Months

I’m finally winding down two very busy months. Things are only slowing down a bit – I’ve still got plenty to do – but I won’t be traveling near as much as I have been the past couple of months. It will be nice.

I also have a bunch of photos to process from the Uinta Mountains and the Oregon coast. I’m excited to get them processed and to see if any of them match up to what I envisioned them to be when I tripped the shutter. Hopefully there will be updates forthcoming.

Spring Shooting in Boise, Idaho

I just returned from a business trip to Boise, Idaho and I packed my camera along for the trip. I sure was glad I did because, as I was eating dinner one of the nights, I noticed a nice storm rolling in that might allow for dramatic skies and great lighting during the sunset. I jumped in the car and headed to a spot I had “scouted” on Google Earth called Camel’s Back Park. I was looking for a good panoramic of the downtown area and this looked like it might hold promise.

As I pulled up and saw the hill within the park I got pretty excited. It would allow me an unobstructed view of downtown from a location that was not too close and not too far away, thus allowing for good panoramic-friendly focal lengths.

I hiked up the hill and spent the rest of the evening there shooting panos as the weather changed. I eventually got pounded with wind and rain but I stuck it out and was rewarded with some very dramatic skies over downtown Boise and a well-lit sunset. The most difficult thing with the outing was having to deal with the wind. The wind was strong enough to jostle my camera just enough that some of the shots had to be redone due to camera shake. I used a caribiner to attach my backpack to the underside of my tripod but that didn’t completely remove shake, which was occurring higher up the tripod as my camera was buffeted by wind.

I’m processing the photos now and am quite happy with how they turned out. I’ll be posting them within the next few days. No matter what, though, standing on a hill with a glorious landscape, dramatic skies, beautiful lighting, wind, rainbows and rain was very nice. It is always great to get out and shoot!

Finally Some Snow

After a dearth of snow we are finally receiving a bunch. Now, should I ski or take the camera out?

Update: I went skiing. It’s too difficult to use my spare time taking photos when I could be skiing.

Fresh Snow and Photos at Lunch

We had some fresh snow last night and this morning so the ground and trees are looking great. The sun came out around noon and things looked quite fantastic, so I headed up to the mountains to see what I could find. I ended up taking shots at about four locations but have yet to see them. Gotta slam some lunch and get back to work. I hope to edit the shots tonight.

Story Behind The Photograph

I have received quite a bit of feedback from visitors that they particularly enjoy the story behind my various photos as well as some of the technical and artistic details surrounding the photograph. I’ve told the story behind a few of the latest photos I’ve uploaded, but there are many in the gallery that have not had their story told (no matter how mundane some of them might be). So, at the risk of seeming narcissistic, I’ve decided to tell the story behind the older photos I’ve got in the gallery.

Lousy Weather

Just wanted to let you know that I’m still around and enjoying photography (though it has been mostly family photography lately). The weather has been uninspiring of late – everything’s dead, there is very little snow, and the inversion has been ever present – so I’m struggling with finding anything to actually photograph. I’ve mostly been scouting out new, promising photo locations so that, once the weather becomes more photogenic, I can get some (hopefully) good photos under my belt.

I’ve also given some thought to this downtime and have decided that, even though the weather isn’t cooperating, I should look for alternative types of photography to explore. I’m going to make a more conscious effort to do so.

Returned from the Tetons

I just got back from a photography trip to Grand Teton National Park where we had a great time shooting in the mornings. The best time of day to shoot the Tetons is sunrise and, since sunrise was at 5:40 AM, I got to climb out of my comfortable sleeping bag into 33 degree temps at 4:45 AM each day. Despite that little bit of difficulty the photography was excellent. We had great conditions due to the storms (dramatic skies are wonderful for landscape shots) and there weren’t too many people.

We camped at Jenny Lake, which is right at the base of the three Tetons, and that is an excellent camp ground if you are ever planning on going up there. It is first-come-first-served and fills up by about 11:00 AM each day, so you’ll need to be quick. They also only allow one vehicle and one tent at each camp ground (no RVs or trailers) but the site has easy access to many trails and has fantastic scenery.

I’m still processing photos from the trip but I’ll post them as I complete each series.
